Great ideas for your Independence Day Celebration!

Washington, DC: enjoy the tradition of the celebration on the mall with family activites ranging from a parade, museum tours, concerts and ending with fireworks.

Northern Virginia has several nice parades that are worth viewing. Be sure to also check out the fantastic celebration that Mount Vernon (George Washington's Historic Home) puts on.

Local: In case your plans aren't firmed up, events are taking place at towns and cities all around the region offering the possibility of tried and true or discovery. Since most events begin early and end late, consider taking a sun hat, sun glasses, a flashlight, lots of water, and sunscreen to make the day a pleasurable experience.

Fireworks: Washington, DC       Northern Virginia       Local

Colonial Williamsburg plans activities, including a reading of the Declaration of Independence, a Palace Picnic, and fireworks for the day. There is a fee for some events in the historic area; for more information go to their special events calendar or call 1-800-HISTORY.

Mount Vernon: the historic home of George Washington, salutes our first commander-in-chief with a dazzling display of daytime fireworks during its annual Independence Day event! For the first time ever, visitors will be treated to spectacular made-for-daytime fireworks in patriotic colors fired during the finale of the National Concert Band of America’s performance. The event also includes an inspirational naturalization ceremony for 100 new citizens (also new this year), military reenactments, a special wreathlaying ceremony, free birthday cake for all (while supplies last), and a visit from the “first” first couple, “General and Mrs. Washington.” For more information, please visit their website.
